How to prepare for your portrait session

Achieving a striking portrait does not depend solely on the photographer's technique or the studio lighting, but on the subject's prior preparation. Careful planning reduces nerves, optimizes shooting time, and ensures that the final image reflects the essence and professionalism you seek.

Choosing your wardrobe and color palette

Wardrobe is one of the most critical elements of a portrait session. Clothing should not only make you feel comfortable but should communicate a message consistent with the objective of the photograph. For corporate or professional portraits, we recommend neutral colors or tones that contrast softly with the white background of the cyclorama in our Sevilla studio.

Avoid using very complex patterns, fine stripes, or excessively large logos, as these can create a "moiré" effect in the camera or distract attention from the face. Solid textures, such as linen or light wool, photograph much better and add depth to the image without saturating the composition.

Personal grooming and makeup

In studio photography, powerful lighting can flatten features or highlight unwanted shine. Therefore, we recommend natural makeup that defines the features without appearing artificial. The use of translucent powders is essential to avoid reflections in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin).

For gentlemen, we suggest a recent shave or a carefully trimmed beard. Regarding hair, it is preferable to avoid drastic changes in cut or color the day before the session to avoid surprises with the final result. Hydrating the skin in the days leading up to the shoot is essential for the makeup to set correctly.

Rest and stress management

The camera captures your emotional state. A tired look or evident tension in the shoulders is difficult to correct entirely in post-production. We recommend getting at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before and maintaining constant hydration. Drinking enough water reduces facial swelling and improves the appearance of the skin.

If you have no experience in front of the camera, it is normal to feel some anxiety. At Asterniva, we dedicate the first few minutes of the session to breaking the ice and guiding every movement. The key is to trust the photographer's instructions and maintain steady breathing so that the facial expression remains organic and relaxed.

Local considerations: The Sevilla climate

Given the intensity of the weather in Sevilla, especially during the spring and summer months, it is common to arrive at the studio showing signs of heat or humidity. Although our studio is fully air-conditioned for your comfort, we suggest transporting your wardrobe on a hanger and changing in our private dressing room to avoid wrinkles or perspiration before starting the shoot.

Arriving about 10 minutes early allows your body to adapt to the indoor temperature and lets you make final wardrobe adjustments without rushing, ensuring that the session begins in a state of total calm.

Managing expectations and delivery

It is important to understand that the portrait process is divided into two stages: capture and post-production. During the session, we focus on pose, expression, and light. The final magic happens in retouching, where our post-production specialist adjusts color and removes temporary imperfections.

Remember that, according to our studio rules, the delivery of selected images takes place within 10 business days. This time is necessary to ensure that each portrait receives the technical attention it deserves, ensuring professional quality consistent with Asterniva standards.

Common questions about preparation

Many clients ask if they should bring several clothing options. The answer is yes, provided that the changes do not excessively prolong the session. We recommend bringing two options: one formal and one slightly more casual, to provide versatility in the final result.

If your session is not for portraits but for your company's products, we invite you to read our guide on product shipping and packaging to ensure your items arrive at the studio in perfect condition.
